Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Awful Truth (Criterion)

For the release week of April 17th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Awful Truth [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Not only did Leo McCarey team Stan Laurel with Oliver Hardy; he also paired Cary Grant with Irene Dunne for this screwball comedy classic.  He also added Skippy the wonder dog (best known as Asta from the Thin Man movies) for insurance.  You won’t find a better time at the movies.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Little Orphant Annie (1918) [Blu-ray + DVD / Eric Gayson Productions]: “An’ the Gobble-uns ‘ll git you ef you don’t watch out” in this recently restored silent from 1918!

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season Eleven [Blu-ray / Shout Factory]: The Kickstarted season from Netflix gets a full season set on Blu-ray.  The reboot does the original series proud.  If anything, the new show has a higher laugh-per-minute ratio.

Model Shop [Blu-ray / Twilight Time]: Director Jacques Demy (Lola, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) traveled to Los Angeles to make his first English-language film, which is also a semi-sequel to Lola (1961).

Seijun Suzuki: The Early Years. Vol. 2. Border Crossings: The Crime and Action Movies (Limited Edition) [Blu-ray + DVD / Arrow Video]: Arrow Video continues its survey of early films from Japanese cult/art/exploitation/Yakuza/crime/action director Seijun Suzuki. This box set includes Eight Hours of Terror (1957), The Sleeping Beast Within (1960), Smashing the 0-Line (1960), Tokyo Knights (1961), and The Man with a Shotgun (1961).

Sleeping Dogs [Blu-ray / Arrow Academy]: Sam Neill and Warren Oates?  ‘Nuff said.

Challenge of the Superfriends: The Complete First Season [DVD / Warner Brothers]: The Legion of Doom rises again for this re-release of one of the golden memories of my childhood.
