Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Cat and the Canary (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of September 15th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Cat and the Canary [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This week, Kino Lorber Studio Classics is releasing a couple of “old dark house” scare comedies co-starring Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard.  These films came very early in Bob Hope’s movie career (1939 and 1940), and they helped him create the wisecracking “brave coward” persona that became his trademark in film comedies.  The Cat and the Canary (1939) is my personal favorite Bob Hope film (My Favorite Blonde is a close second), so I can’t wait to get my hands on this disc.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Ghost Breakers [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: A few months after The Cat and the Canary, Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard re-teamed for another scare comedy, this one involving a supposedly haunted castle in Cuba and zombies.

4-Film Collection: Film Noir [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]Four classic films noir, Murder, My Sweet (1944), Out of the Past (1947), The Set-Up (1949), and Gun Crazy (1950), which were previously released as individual Warner Archive Blu-rays, have been repackaged in this 4-film collection.  If you don’t have the individual releases, this collection is an essential purchase for every film lover.

The Flying Leathernecks [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: The WWII battle of Guadalcanal is dramatized in this Nicholas Ray film starring John Wayne and Robert Ryan.

The Sons of Katie Elder [Blu-ray / Paramount]The second best Western teaming of John Wayne and Dean Martin gets an HD release from Paramount.

The Two Jakes [Blu-ray / Paramount]Paramount is also giving the second best Jake Gittes mystery an HD release.  It ain’t Chinatown, but it’s pretty good.

Roman Holiday [Blu-ray / Paramount]: This popular Audrey Hepburn/Gregory Peck romantic comedy gets a prestige Blu-ray release through the Paramount Presents collection.

Barefoot in the Park [Blu-ray / Paramount]Robert Redford and Jane Fonda play young marrieds in this romantic comedy, based on the Neil Simon play.
