Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Circus (Criterion)

For the release week of September 24th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Circus [Blu-ray / Criterion]: This silent comedy has been one of the most ignored or dismissed of Chaplin’s features, likely due to the fact that it was sandwiched between The Gold Rush and City Lights, which are generally considered to be his masterpieces.  Hopefully, this Criterion Blu-ray release will help to restore the reputation of The Circus, because it is an incredibly inventive film and one of Chaplin’s funniest.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Local Hero [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Bill Forsyth’s beloved comedy also gets the Criterion treatment.

The Major And The Minor [Blu-ray / Arrow Academy]: Billy Wilder’s directorial career starts here.

Ida Lupino: Filmmaker Collection [Not Wanted / Never Fear / The Hitch-Hiker / The Bigamist] [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This box set shines a much-deserved spotlight on one of the few female directors of the studio era.

The Set-Up [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Noir + Boxing = Entertainment.

The Letter [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Look out!  She has a gun!

A Bucket of Blood [Blu-ray / Olive Signature]: “That guy” Dick Miller stars in this dark comedy of beatniks, art, and murder.

Count Three and Pray [Blu-ray / Sony]: I’ve never heard of this Western, but it stars Van Heflin, which is good enough for me.

The Great Waldo Pepper [Blu-ray / Shout Select]: I saw this in its original theatrical release when I was six.  I remember liking the planes.

Going My Way [Blu-ray / Shout Select]: “Would you like to swing on a star…”
