Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Favourite (20th Century Fox)

For the release week of March 5th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Favourite [Blu-ray / 20th Century Fox]: I rarely choose a new movie as my top pick of the week, but The Favourite was my favorite film of last year.  It is an exceptionally well lensed and directed pitch black comedy/drama.  The three lead actresses are all fantastic, but I think that Rachel Weisz’s quietly simmering performance is a standout.  The film may be too cold-bloodedly mean for some audiences, but I found it to be an acidic delight.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Marquise [Blu-ray / Film Movement]:  Here is another costume comedy/drama.  However, this 1995 film, starring the luminous Sophie Marceau, is a bit of a question mark at this point, because it is just now getting its first U.S. release, courtesy of Film Movement.

Phantom Lady [Blu-ray / Arrow Academy]: Ella Raines stars in this beautiful black and white noir mystery by Richard Siodmak, with an energetic supporting role by the geat Elisha Cook Jr.

The Prisoner [Blu-ray / Arrow Academy]: Alec Guinness is a Catholic Cardinal being interrogated by a state inquisitor (Jack Hawkins) in this stagey drama.

Sister Street Fighter Collection [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: Four Japanese exploitation action films that spun off of Sonny Chiba’s Streetfighter series are collected in this box set.
