Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Mad Adventures of ‘Rabbi’ Jacob (Film Movement)
For the release week of September 10th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Mad Adventures of 'Rabbi' Jacob [Blu-ray / Film Movement]
: Louis de Funès was one of the most popular comedians (if not THE most popular) in the history of French cinema, but he is virtually unknown in English-speaking countries. Consequently, it is always an event when one of his films gets a Region A Blu-ray release. I’ve never seen this film, in which a bigot has to disguise himself as a rabbi, while trying to escape a group of assassins. Thank you, Film Movement, for finally giving me the opportunity to check it out in high definition.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead / Hot Fuzz / The World's End) [4K UHD / Universal]
: Edgar Wright co-wrote and directed three of the smartest and funniest comedies of the 21st Century. This week, they all get a bump in image quality with this 4K UHD release.
Pittsburgh [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: John Wayne, Randolph Scott, and Marlene Dietrich share screen time with Shemp Howard!
The Spoilers [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: John Wayne, Randolph Scott, and Marlene Dietrich re-teamed the same year, but they failed to invite Shemp this time.
Reap the Wild Wind [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: John Wayne is teamed with Ray Milland and the great Paulette Goddard in this one. The eternally overrated Cecil B. Demille directed, but it’s supposed to be pretty good nonetheless.
Mirage [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]
: The writer of Charade rips off Hitchcock again.
Scars of Dracula [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]
: Doctor Who’s Patrick Troughton co-stars in this Hammer/Christopher Lee Dracula flick.
Blood from the Mummy's Tomb [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]
: Lesser late Hammer, but completists (like me) will want to pick it up.
The Jetsons: The Complete Original Series [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]
: Are you brand loyal to Spacely Sprockets or Coswell Cogs?
