Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Magnificent Ambersons (Criterion)

For the release week of November 27th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Magnificent Ambersons [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Orson’s Welles’ second film is arguably better than Citizen Kane, and the first half hour is probably the best work of his career.  Being that Welles’ career is overflowing with superlative moments, The Magnificent Ambersons belongs on the shelves of every movie collector.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Brewster McCloud [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Robert Altman blew most of the cachet he had gained from directing M*A*S*H with this extraordinarily eccentric follow-up.  It’s completely wackadoodle and not for everyone, but I love it.

Gosford Park [Blu-ray / Arrow Academy]: The best film of Altman’s last decade finally gets a high definition release.  This manor house murder mystery is as full of vivid detail as the most masterful of his 1970s films.

Topper Takes A Trip [Blu-ray / VCI]: The second of the Topper series of supernatural comedies is the last to hit Blu-ray, so now you can complete the collection.

Zombie [Blu-ray / Blue Underground]: Who would win in a fight between a zombie and a shark?  You can find out here.

Almost Human [Blu-ray / Code Red]: Umberto Lenzi directs this nasty crime thriller and Ennio Morricone provides the score.
