Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Producers (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of April 13th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Producers [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: While Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and (inexplicably) Spaceballs are more popular titles from writer/director Mel Brooks, I personally believe that his first film is his very best. The characters and story in The Producers are stronger than any of the films that followed, and the screenplay is near perfection. It is simply one of the greatest movie comedies ever made. This week, Kino Lorber releases a new 4K restoration on Blu-ray, and the film has never looked better on home video. You can find my full review of the disc HERE.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Spaceballs [4K UHD / Kino Lorber]: Speaking of Spaceballs, it is getting a 4K UHD release this week. Personally, I’m not a fan, but you like this Star Wars spoof, enjoy.

Dynasty 3-D [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Martial Arts action pierces the third dimension in Dynasty (1977, Qian dao wan li zhu). The film is presented in three separate versions — Real 3-D for those with a 3-D television or projection set-up, anaglyphic 3D which is viewable for anyone with the red/blue glasses provided, and standard 2-D.

History Is Made at Night [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Frank Borzage’s 1937 romantic drama gets the Criterion treatment. Jean Arthur and Charles Boyer star.

Two Films by Lois Weber [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Two silent melodramas directed by Lois Weber, A Chapter in her Life (1923) and Sensation Seekers (1927), are presented together on a single Blu-ray.
