Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Three Musketeers (Warner Archive)

For the release week of February 15th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: The Three Musketeers [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: The second best adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ swashbuckling classic gets a HD release from the Warner Archive Collection. I’m a huge fan of Dumas’ Musketeer novels (there are multiple literary sequels), so I’m always interested in checking out the movie adaptations of those works. While I’ll always be partial to the 1973 version, directed by Richard Lester (with Oliver Reed’s definitive interpretation of Athos), George Sidney’s 1948 version ain’t bad. Gene Kelly stars as D’Artagnan, with a supporting cast that includes Lana Turner, June Allyson, Van Heflin, Gig Young, Robert Coote, Angela Lansbury, Vincent Price, Keenan Wynn, Frank Morgan, and Reginald Owen. Not bad at all.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy [Blu-ray / Paramount]: The Canadian sketch comedy troupe’s big screen debut was better than reviews would have led you to believe.

Love Affair [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Love Affair was An Affair to Remember before An Affair to Remember was An Affair to Remember.

The Howling [4K UHD / Scream Factory]: Joe Dante’s take on the werewolf genre gets a 4K UHD upgrade.

Looper [4K UHD / Sony]: Rian Johnson is one of the most reliable directors working today. His entertaining time-travel thriller also gets a 4K UHD upgrade.
