Garv’s Pick of the Week: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (20th Century Fox)

For the release week of February 27th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri [4K UHD / 20th Century Fox]: Ignore the backlash.  Martin McDonagh’s pitch black drama is a modern day classic.  Frances McDomand is a force of nature in the lead.  Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson lend great support (as well as the much less heralded Samara Weaving).  And McDonagh’s script is both darkly funny and terribly sad.  In short, it’s good.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Marcel Perez Collection: Vol. 2 [DVD / Undercrank Productions]: Recently discovered short comedies by this forgotten Spanish-born silent comedian receive new life thanks to restorations by the Library of Congress and the Museum of Modern Art.  Thanks are also owed to the composer, Ben Model, who scored the shorts and produced the DVD release.  By the way, Volume 1 is also still available.

Tom Jones [Blu-ray / Criterion]: The Academy Award’s 1964 Best Picture winner gets the Criterion treatment with a release that includes both the original theatrical version and the director’s cut.

The Outlaw [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Howard Hughes’ Western (co-directed by an uncredited Howard Hawks) introduced the world to Jane Russell.

Harper [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Ross McDonald’s semi-hard boiled detective, Lew Archer, becomes Lew Harper (and is played by Paul Newman) in the film adaptation of his novel, The Moving Target.

The Drowning Pool [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Newman returned to the role of Lew Harper nine years later for this sequel, based on Mc Donald’s second Lew Archer novel.

The Oldest Profession [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This omnibus film features six shorts, centered around the theme of prostitution through the ages, directed by some of the top European directors of the time.  Jean-Luc Godard’s contribution is the standout.

Birdman of Alcatraz [Blu-ray / Olive Films]: If you missed Twilight Time’s sold out limited edition Blu-ray, you now have a second chance to pick up this Burt Lancaster film.

Hallelujah Trail [Blu-ray / Olive Films]: Burt Lancaster leads this Western comedy about a wagon train full of whiskey.

The Sect [Blu-ray / Scorpion Releasing]: An Italian horror from Michele Soalvi makes its Blu-ray debut.

Basket Case [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: Trust me.  Don’t look in the basket.
