Garv’s Pick of the Week: Three Films by Luis Buñuel (Criterion)

For the release week of January 5th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Three Films by Luis Buñuel [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Art film was rarely as fun as the cinema of surrealistic maestro Luis Buñuel. Three of his popular, late-career satires, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), The Phantom of Liberty (1974), and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977) are gathered together in this shelf-saving box set. This is a very nice way to start out the new year.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Train [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: A couple of excellent films get a Blu-ray re-release this week. If you haven’t picked up the prior Blu-ray releases of this excellent war thriller, it is highly recommended.

The Man Who Would Be King [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Here’s the other prominent re-release. John Huston originally planned this film for Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart. That would have been fun, but Sean Connery and Michael Caine is one of the greatest screen pairings of all time. Connery has more chemistry with Caine than any of his Bond beauties.

Rough Night in Jericho [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]I haven’t seen this one, but it is a Western starring Dean Martin, so I’m in.

Texas Across the River [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: I have seen this one, and it’s not very good. Still, it’s a Western with Rat Packers Dean Martin and Joey Bishop, so it has its moments.

Wild West Days [Blu-ray / VCI]: This Universal serial promises Western action with Johnny Mack Brown in 13 rip-roaring episodes. Let me know if it keeps that promise.
