Garv’s Pick of the Week: Thrillers from the Vault: 8 Classic Horror Films (Mill Creek)

For the release week of February 14th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Thrillers from the Vault: 8 Classic Horror Films [Blu-ray / Mill Creek]: Universal wasn’t the only studio churning out horror films during the classic era, and this Blu-ray box set collects eight spooky thrillers produced at Columbia Pictures between 1935 and 1951. The included titles are the Boris Karloff films The Black Room (1935), The Man They Could Not Hang (1939), Before I Hang (1940), The Man with Nine Lives (1940), The Devil Commands (1941), and The Boogie Man Will Get You (1942, co-starring Peter Lorre). Also included are The Return of the Vampire (1943, starring Bela Lugosi) and Five (1951), an apocalyptic thriller written and directed by Arch Oboler (of Lights Out radio fame).

Additional Titles of Interest —

Sci-Fi from the Vault: 4 Classic Horror Films [Blu-ray / Mill Creek]: Here’s a companion set of 50s science fiction flicks from Columbia Pictures. Included are Creature with the Atom Brain (1955), It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955), 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), and The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock (1959, starring comedian Lou Costello in his last movie).

Giallo Essentials: White Edition [Blu-ray / Mill Creek]: Ya either like giallo or ya don’t. Personally, I’m a sucker for these atmospheric Italian thrillers/proto-slashers. Included in this set are The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1971), The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire (1971), and The Suspicious Death of a Minor (1975).

Francois Truffaut Collection  [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: If you’re looking for a higher class Blu-ray collection, this Kino Lorber set includes four films from French director Francois Truffaut: The Wild Child (1970), Small Change (1976), The Man Who Loved Women (1977), and The Green Room (1978)

The Bride Wore Black [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: Kino is also releasing three individual Truffaut Blu-rays, starting with the Hitchcockean revenge thriller The Bride Wore Black (1968). Jeanne Moreau stars. This title and the next two received prior Blu-ray releases from Twilight Time, which are no longer in print.

Mississippi Mermaid [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Paul Belmondo star in this 1969 Truffaut thriller.

The Story of Adele H. [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: Isabelle Adjani earned a Best Actress nomination for this 1975 Truffaut drama.

Romeo and Juliet [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy gets the Criterion treatment. Teenagers Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey play the titular characters.

White Woman [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Carole Lombard, Charles Laughton, and Charles Bickford star in this over-the-top Pre-Code melodrama set on a Malaysian rubber plantation.
