Garv’s Pick of the Week: Touchez Pas au Grisbi (Kino Lorber)
For the release week of August 13th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Touchez Pas Au Grisbi [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This French gangster film, which translates as “Don’t Touch the Loot,” boosted Jean Gabin’s flagging career and launched a craze for French film noir. If you like the crime films of Jean-Pierre Melville, you’ll like this too. Trust me. It’s worth a blind buy.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Razzia Sur La Chnouf [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: A year after Touchez Pas au Gribi, Jean Gabin and Lino Ventura re-teamed for another noirish crime film. This time, it involved the French drug trade.
Port of Shadows AKA Le Quai Des Brumes [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino is also releasing an earlier-career Jean Gabin film, which pairs crime and romance, then covers it with a lot of fog.
Wagon Master [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: John Ford’s 1950 wagon train Western stars his regular stock company minus John Wayne. It’s still top-tier Ford.
Django the Bastard [Blu-ray / Synapse Films]: This Euro-Western often gets compared with High Plains Drifter.
Radioland Murders [Blu-ray / Universal]: George Lucas wrote the story for this comedy set during the days of old time radio, but don’t hold that against it.
Fierce Creatures [Blu-ray / Universal]: John Cleese’s follow-up to A Fish Called Wanda gets an HD upgrade.
Blackmail [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Alfred Hitchcock’s first sound film makes its Blu-ray debut, along with a silent version with a score from the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra.
Murder! [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino is also releasing another early Hitchcock talkie. Hitch eventually got better with coming up with titles.
