Garv’s Pick of the Week: Universal Horror Collection: Vol. 1 (Scream Factory)

For the release week of June 18th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Universal Horror Collection: Vol.1 [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: This Blu-ray set includes four film pairings of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi — The Black Cat (1934), The Raven (1935), The Invisible Ray (1936), and Black Friday (1940).  It is worth the purchase just for The Black Cat, which is one of the most beautiful, twisted, sadistic, and subversive horror films of the 1930s.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Silent Partner [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: A bank robber (Christopher Plummer) plays “cat and mouse” with a bank teller (Elliott Gould) in this Canadian cult classic.  A full review will be posted soon.

The Brink's Job [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: William Friedkin’s comic heist film is an expertly crafted delight.  You can find my full review HERE.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea [Blu-ray / Disney Movie Club Exclusive]: The Jules Verne novel that more or less forged the Steampunk movement gets Disneyfied in this grand 1954 adventure film.  This colorful classic with Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Peter Lorre has been one of the most requested titles for a HD upgrade.  Beginning Tuesday, the Blu-ray will be available as a Disney Movie Club exclusive.  The title will not be offered in stores or through online retailers.  Unless you want to buy it secondhand, you can only get it by joining the club through THIS LINK.

Return of the Castaways [Blu-ray / Disney Movie Club Exclusive]: Disney returned to the world of Jules Verne in 1962 for this family adventure film.  Starting Tuesday, this title will also be offered on Blu-ray exclusively through the Disney Movie Club.

Popeye The Sailor: The 1940s Volume 2 [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: I bet spinach is involved somehow.

L'Eau a la Bouche / A Game for Six Lovers [Blu-ray + DVD / Cinetrove International]: I’m unfamiliar with this New Wave love story, but I’m glad Cinetrove International keeps releasing these lesser-known French catalog titles.
