Garv’s Pick of the Week: Western Classics I (Kino Lorber Studio Classics)
For the release week of June 9th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Western Classics I [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino Lorber Studio Classics has begun packaging lesser-known catalog titles in 3-disc Blu-ray box sets to make them more attractive to collectors who might not buy the films individually. This box set collects together three 1940s Westerns — When the Daltons Rode (1940), The Virginian (1946), and Whispering Smith (1948). To be honest, I have not seen any of these titles, but with stars like Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, and Alan Ladd included, these look to be top-tier second-tier titles.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema III [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Here’s another 3-disc Blu-ray set from Kino. This one includes the noir thrillers Abandoned (1949), The Lady Gambles (1949), and The Sleeping City (1950).
Deanna Durbin Collection I [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Finally, Deanna Durbin gets the first of what promises to be multiple 3-disc Blu-ray box sets. This one includes 100 Men and a Girl (1937), Three Smart Girls Grow Up (1939), and It Started with Eve (1941).
Victor and Victoria [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Did you know that Blake Edwards’ best film, Victor/Victoria, was a remake of a 1933 German musical? You do now.
An Unmarried Woman [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Paul Mazursky and Jill Clayburgh get the Criterion treatment.
