Garv’s Pick of the Week: Whisky Galore! / The Maggie (Film Movement)

For the release week of March 10th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Whisky Galore! / The Maggie [Blu-ray / Film Movement]: Two classic British comedies directed by Alexander MacKendrick at legendary laugh-factory, Ealing Studios, are being released together on this disc.  Whisky Galore has long been a personal favorite, which I reviewed back in the days of my Booze Movies blog.  I haven’t seen The Maggie, but I have yet to encounter an Ealing comedy that I didn’t like.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Canyon Passage [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Kino is also releasing three classic Western titles this week.  I may have seen them previously, but if so, it was in the hazy past, and I don’t remember.  This 1946 entry stars Dana Andrews, Brian Donlevy, and Susan Hayward.  All three are amongst the more interesting actors of the period.  Plus, the film was directed by the great Jacques Tourneur, so it’s probably worth a look.

Night Passage [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: The teaming of Anthony Mann and James Stewart came to an end with this picture, when Mann pulled out of the project, due to what he considered a poor script.  The critics agreed.  However, the film does feature Dan Duryea as a baddie, and that’s always a plus.

The Rare Breed [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: James Stewart and Maureen O’Hara were both past their prime when they co-starred in this more comedic Western with a middling reputation.

The Ten Commandments [Blu-ray Digibook / Paramount]:LET MY PEOPLE GO!!!!”  This digibook includes both the silent and more familiar sound version of Cecil B. DeMille’s biblical epic.

Uncut Gems [Blu-ray / Lionsgate]: Not recommended for those with heart conditions or prone to anxiety.  Otherwise, enjoy!
