The Criterion Channel Streaming Service
For those of you, like me, who mourn the loss of FilmStruck (the greatest streaming service that ever was), today’s announcement from The Criterion Collection should be very intriguing. Their new streaming service, The Criterion Channel, will launch April 8th, and charter subscribers can begin enjoying free content prior to the actual free trial period, through their “Movie of the Week” series. In addition, charter subscribers will be locked in at a lower subscription price than customers that order after launch.
I’m hoping that the actual service will include more than just the Criterion library, because part of what I loved about FilmStruck was that it also contained titles from Warner Brothers, TCM, Kino Lorber, Flicker Alley, and even occasionally Arrow Video. Hopefully, Criterion is currently working on partnering with other labels.
I ordered a trial subscription today, and the first “Movie of the Week” is Elaine May’s Mikey and Nicky (1976). One tip, the service currently streams through the VHX app, so if you currently have a VHX account, use the same email to subscribe to The Criterion Channel, so you don’t end up with two separate logins for VHX.
