Columbus Moving Picture Show May 26-29, 2022

Every Memorial Day weekend, film fans and collectors gather in Columbus, Ohio for the annual Cinevent classic film convention to experience four days of near-continuous 16mm screenings of rare silent and sound films from the first half of the 2oth Century. After more than 53 years, Cinevent held its final show in 2021, but that didn’t spell the end of the annual pilgrimage. Cinevent 2021 was co-presented by The Columbus Moving Picture Show, and this year the show will go on under the new title.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2022 Columbus Moving Picture Show, taking place at the Renaissance Downtown Columbus Hotel from May 26-29, 2022. It will feature the same mix of 16mm screenings of silent films with live piano accompaniment, classic sound features in black & white and Kodachrome color, cliffhanger serials, and Hal Roach shorts (Laurel & Hardy, Charley Chase, Our Gang). As in the past, there will be a large vendor room, movie introductions by film historians and authors, and book signings. There are even a couple of seminars on the menu this year.

One of the best things about this convention is you get the opportunity to watch rare classic movies that you are unlikely to see elsewhere. Several titles screened each year have never received a home video release and most rarely (if ever) air on television. You can access the Full Movie Schedule here.

Some of this year’s highlights for me are the screenings of Abbott & Costello’s Hold That Ghost (1941) with an introduction by Nick Santa Maria (actor and author of the upcoming The Annotated Abbott and Costello), the Max Linder silent feature The Little Cafe (1919) with an introduction by Lisa Stein Haven (author of The Rise & Fall of Max Linder), the pre-code genre-hybrid Murder at the Vanities (1934), and a rare screening of the complete theatrical version of Phil Silvers’ musical comedy Top Banana (1954), including the 15 minutes of footage that has been cut out of video releases and TV airings.

If you are interested in attending, the full details can be found on the Columbus Moving Picture Show website.

Hope to see you there!
