Dynasty (1977) Martial Arts 3-D Blu-ray Kickstarter

Dynasty (1977) Martial Arts 3-D Blu-ray Kickstarter

Bob Furmanek and the 3-D Film Archive, who recently restored the Abbott and Costello film Africa Screams (1949), has launched a new Kickstarter.  This time, they are trying to raise $10,000 to restore the 3-D martial arts film, Dynasty (Qian dao wan li zhu, 1977), for a 3-D Blu-ray release (Region A only).

The great news is that you won’t need a 3-D home video set up to enjoy the film in 3-D.  The Blu-ray will present the film in three versions:

  • A BD3D polarized version for people with 3-D TVs and Blu-ray players
  • A anaglyphic (red/cyan) 3-D version with one pair of anaglyphic 3-D glasses for viewing on any TV
  • A flat 2-D version

The Kickstarter has 28 days to go, and it has already reached its goal, so the Blu-ray will be produced!  If you are interested in getting a copy, you can back the Kickstarter here: Help Restore DYNASTY in 3-D!

Here’s some more info on the Kickstarter:

Since October 2015, my 3-D Film Archive has successfully restored twenty vintage features for preservation and Blu-ray release. Generous backers have supported our two previous Kickstarter campaigns presented with 3-D SPACE: September Storm and El Corazón y la Espada.

Most recently, 627 generous backers supported our campaign to save and restore our first flat film; Abbott and Costello’s 1949 classic, Africa Screams. The Blu-ray and DVD is available now from our friends at ClassicFlix.com   Click here for more information.

I am now asking for your help to restore the 1977 martial arts 3-D classic, Dynasty aka Qian dao wan li zhu aka Super Dragon.

This 3-D pop-out spectacular is directed by Mei-Chun Chang and stars Tao-Liang Tan, Ying Bai, Kang Chin and David Wei Tang. (Ying Bai was given an award for Best Supporting Actor at the 1977 Golden Horse Film Festival.) The original screenplay is by Kuo-Hsiung Liu and the stereo cinematography is by Jung-Shu Chen.

The goal for this restoration is to raise $10,000. These funds will enable us to do 4K digital scans of the surviving 35mm materials. Once scanned, we will execute;

  • Meticulous frame by frame digital clean-up of all dirt and damage.
  • Left/right shot-by-shot stereoscopic vertical alignment correction.
  • Flicker reduction.
  • Scene to scene color restoration.
  • Image stabilization and grading to assemble a fully restored digital 3-D master.

This new digital master will then be utilized for a Region 1 (A) 3-D Blu-ray release. This disc will not be a BD-R, it will be a commercial disc pressed and manufactured to current industry standards.

Our distributor for this release will be announced before the end of the campaign on July 31. Our goal is to have this release in your hands no later than December 2020.

This will be our first release in Compatible 3-D meaning you can view it on any system. The package will have both BD3D polarized AND anaglyphic (red/cyan) 3-D versions. In other words, a dedicated 3-D Blu-ray player/display will not be required to view Dynasty in 3-D. The packaging will contain one pair of anaglyphic 3-D glasses with information on how to acquire additional glasses.

The film will also be playable in standard flat 2D mode.

The audio channel will have the English dub track only, in the miracle of 4-channel magnetic Quadrophonic sound.

Our campaign is very basic this time with only one reward level for a Compatible 3-D Blu-ray. However, you are more than welcome to pledge higher than $35.00 if you want to help us reach our goal of $10,000.00 – and unlock some VERY exciting stretch goals – even sooner.

On behalf of the entire 3-D Film Archive restoration team, we truly appreciate your interest and thank you very much for looking at our campaign. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Please make a pledge now to help us save and restore this exciting 3-D Martial Arts classic!

Risks and challenges

Our goal is to have the film fully restored and available to backers no later than December 2020. As with any restoration project working with vintage materials, there may be unforeseen problems and technical issues as we undertake the hard work of restoring this film. That being said, we have already inspected the 35mm elements and do not anticipate any problems with our restoration timeline. Our track record is exemplary. Since October 2015, we have met deadlines and restored twenty vintage films for release on Blu-ray. Our unique and efficient restoration workflow has established an excellent reputation for our team within this field. You can read more about our past efforts at www.3dfilmarchive.com.
