Garv’s Pick of the Week: Back to the Beach (Paramount Presents)

For the release week of August 9th:

Back to the Beach [Blu-ray / Paramount Presents]: Twenty years after the end of AIP’s popular Beach Party series, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello went Back to the Beach for this enjoyable follow-up. Sure, Eric Von Zipper (the late, great Harvey Lembeck) was missed, but joining the fun were Pee-Wee Herman (Paul Reubens), Lori Loughlin, Connie Stevens, Dick Dale, Fishbone, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jerry Mathers, Tony Dow, Don Adams, and more. Any film that features Pee-Wee Herman covering “Surfin’ Bird” by The Trashmen is worth the price of admission.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Heat [4K UHD / Disney]: Michael Mann’s 1995 crime thriller gets a 4K UHD upgrade. I still say that if you cut out the last 10 minutes, before the final confrontation between Pacino and De Niro, you’d have a better film.

Alexander the Great [Blu-ray / Sandpiper Pictures]: Sandpiper is re-releasing a couple of epics on Blu-ray. Both films were originally released through Twilight Time and have since gone out of print. This one stars Richard Burton as the titular “Great” man.

Solomon and Sheba [Blu-ray / Sandpiper Pictures]: I’m a bit more interested in this Sandpiper release, as I enjoy goofy Biblical epics more than self-serious historical epics. Plus, this one has Gina Lollobrigida, which is never a bad thing.

Flying Guillotine 2 [Blu-ray / 88 Films]: Because one flying guillotine is never enough.
