Garv’s Pick of the Week: Lon Chaney: Before the Thousand Faces – Vol. 2 (Undercrank Productions)

For the release week of August 2nd:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Lon Chaney: Before the Thousand Faces – Vol. 2 [Blu-ray / Undercrank Productions]: Undercrank Productions, in conjunction with the Library of Congress, has collected five more rare films from the early career of Lon Chaney in this set. Each film has been newly scored by Jon C. Mirsalis. Included are By The Sun’s Rays (1914), The Oubliette (1914), The Millionaire Paupers (1915), Triumph (1917) and The Scarlet Car (1917). To coincide with the new release, Undercrank Productions will also release a Blu-ray edition of the first volume, originally issued only on DVD in 2017. This is a bounty of unexpected treasures for fans of the “Man With a Thousand Faces.” I included Amazon links to both Blu-rays below.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Essential Jacques Demy [Blu-ray / Criterion]: Criterion’s Blu-ray/DVD box set of six essential films from director Jacques Demy gets a re-release, minus the DVDs. The slimmed-down, 6-Blu-ray box set includes Lola (1961), Bay of Angels (1963), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), Donkey Skin (1970), and Une Chambre en Ville (1982). The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967) are musical masterpieces that I revisit regularly. The other four films are interesting and well worth the watch.

Cow [Blu-ray / IFC Films]: I haven’t seen this documentary from Academy Award winner Andrea Arnold, but how can you dislike a portrait of the daily life of a dairy cow?
