Garv’s Pick of the Week: Columbia Classics Collection: Volume 1 4K (Sony)

For the release week of June 16th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Columbia Classics Collection: Volume 1 4K [4K UHD / Sony]: Kit Parker Film’s Laurel & Hardy: The Definitive Restorations Blu-ray box set was pushed back from June 16th to June 30th, so this is my back-up pick.  However, for “second place,” this is quite a release.  Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Strangelove, Gandhi, Jerry McGuire, and A League of Their Own all get a 4K UHD upgrade, and early reviews have been excellent.  If you love all these films and you have a 4K setup, this is a “must own” release.  However, if you only love some of these films, you may want to wait for individual 4K releases.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Cameraman [Blu-ray / Criterion]: When Buster Keaton moved to MGM Studios, it was the end of his creative freedom.  However, his first two films under the MGM contract (which were his last silent features), still contain some of the magic of his earlier films.  Both films, The Cameraman and Spite Marriage, are included in this release.  While the Blu-ray only lists The Cameraman on the cover, Spite Marriage is included as a supplemental feature.

Universal Horror Collection: Volume 5 [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]This box set contains four lesser-known Universal horror films, The Monster and the Girl, Captive Wild Woman, Jungle Woman, and Jungle Captive.  What do they have in common?  Gorilla suits!

Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]Another gorilla suit movie?  Yep, but this one features David Warner and Vanessa Redgrave.  That probably makes it the classiest gorilla suit movie ever made.

Isadora [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]Vanessa Redgrave is back, but there’s not a gorilla suit to be seen.
