Garv’s Pick of the Week: Deep Red (Arrow Video)

For the release week of April 10th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Deep Red (Limited Edition) [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: Mario Bava set down the rules for the giallo thriller with Blood and Black Late (Sei Donne Per L’Assassino, 1964), but Dario Argento really popularized the genre.  Deep Red is the very best of Argento’s gialli.  It’s clever, beautiful, and creepy as hell.  Don’t watch it for the first time, as I did, late at night when you are home alone.  You may not sleep.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Tex Avery’s Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection [DVD / Warner Archive]:  “Ya know what?…  I’m happy.”  That’s because everyone’s favorite stone-faced pooch is returning to home video.  The Warner Archive has resurrected this out-of-print DVD collection of all of Droopy’s cartoons directed by his creator, madcap animation master, Tex Avery.  The set has been added to their manufacture-on-demand line.

Phantom Thread [Blu-ray / Universal]: If you love Paul Thomas Anderson films, you’ll love his newest.  If you don’t, Phantom Thread won’t change your mind about the writer/director.  Personally, I love Anderson’s films, and his latest is another feast for the senses.  One caveat — If you want to watch the film in the optimum picture quality, you may want to hold off until next month, because the 4K UHD disc will be released in May.

Up in Smoke [Blu-ray / Paramount]: Cheech & Chong’s first movie makes the leap to HD, so those reefer clouds should look much more crisp now.

Enigma Rosso [Blu-ray / Scorpion Releasing]: Written by Massimo Dallamano (What Have You Done to Solange?, What Have They Done to Your Daughters?), this was planned to be the final part of his “school girl in peril” giallo trilogy.  Unfortunately, Dallamano died in a car crash before production began, so the film was directed by Alberto Negrin.
