Garv’s Pick of the Week: Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood (Criterion)

For the release week of July 3rd:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Dietrich and von Sternberg in Hollywood [Blu-ray / Criterion]: This 6-Disc collector’s box set contains all of the films that director Josef von Sternberg and star Marlene Dietrich made together after the German actress immigrated to Hollywood.  The set features new 2K or 4K digital restorations of all six films: Morocco (1930), Dishonored (1931), Shanghai Express (1932), Blonde Venus (1932), The Scarlet Empress (1934), and The Devil Is a Woman (1935).  That’s a lot of masterly lit celluloid in one box.

Additional Titles of Interest —

The Complete Sartana [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: This 5-Disc, limited edition Blu-ray set contains new restorations of all five films featuring the Euro-Western Superman: If You Meet Sartana… Pray for Your Death (1968), I Am Sartana, Your Angel of Death (1969), Sartana’s Here… Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin (1970), Have a Good Funeral My Friend… Sartana Will Pay (1970), and Light the Fuse… Sartana Is Coming (1970).

The Last House On The Left (3-Disc Limited Edition) [Blu-ray / Arrow Video]: I’m not sure you want to watch Wes Craven’s nasty directorial debut multiple times, but this limited edition set from Arrow Video contains three cuts of the film, newly restored in 2K from original film elements.

Here To Be Heard: The Story Of The Slits [DVD / Moviehouse Entertainment]: Punk rock’s first all-girl group get the documentary treatment.
