Garv’s Pick of the Week: For a Few Dollars More (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of March 26th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: For a Few Dollars More (Special Edition) [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Sergio Leone’s follow-up to A Fistful of Dollars has been released previously on Blu-ray, but this 4K restoration is touted to be a big improvement in picture quality.  For a film this good, it is worth the upgrade.  By the way, Lee Van Cleef is the real star of this film, in the same way that Eli Wallach is the real lead in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.  Clint is good, but he’s the supporting character.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Road to Singapore [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Dorothy Lamour starred in seven classic comedies set in exotic locales.  The last three films in the series (Road to Rio, Bali, and Hong Kong) were previously released on Blu-ray.  Now, Kino Lorber Studio Classics completes the collection by giving the first four Road pictures an HD upgrade.  I got an early look at each of the discs.  Here’s my full review of the first of the four new releases.

Road to Zanzibar [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Here’s my full review of the second in the series.

Road to Morocco [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Here’s my full review of the third trek down the road.

Road to Utopia [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: The fourth trek down the road is my personal favorite.  Here’s my full review.

The Iceman Cometh [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: John Frankenheimer’s film adaption of the landmark Eugene O’Neill play is the best of the American Film Theatre’s output.  Both the original theatrical version and the 4-hour director’s cut are included in the new Blu-ray package.  Here’s my full review.

The Street Fighter Collection [Blu-ray / Shout Select]: Sonny Chiba makes monster faces while crushing skulls in this trilogy of martial arts exploitation films.

Ikarie XB 1 [Blu-ray / Second Run]: This looks really intriguing.  It’s a 1963 Czech black & white sci-fi film about a mission into deep space in a search for alien life.  Second Run is a British label, but this title is Region-free, so it will play in Blu-ray players worldwide.  A full review is forthcoming.

The Body Snatcher [Blu-ray / Scream Factory]: Boris Karloff stars in this excellent Val Lewton production directed by Robert Wise.  The Blu-ray is a new 4k restoration from the original camera negative.

The Golden Head [Blu-ray / Flicker Alley]: Another Cinerama film gets a restoration and release in the Smilebox format.

Flying Clipper [Blu-ray / Flicker Alley]: This 70mm travelogue from 1963 should look great on Blu-ray.

Monsieur La Souris [Blu-ray + DVD / Cinetrove International]: I know nothing about this 1942 French film, except that it is based on a Georges Simenon novel.  However, I’m very happy that there is a label like Cinetrove International that is bringing it to Blu-ray.
