Garv’s Pick of the Week: Hester Street (Cohen Film Collection)

For the release week of March 8th:

A few big 4K UHD releases of classic films that were planned for this week were pushed back to March 15th. As a result, this week’s releases of interest are fairly light. You may want to save your shekels for the glut of releases next week.

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Hester Street [Blu-ray / Cohen Film Collection]: Joan Micklin Silver’s feature film debut was a comedy/drama that explored the pitfalls of marriage and the late-19th Century immigrant experience, through the lens of one Jewish family. The low-budget indie became a surprise Awards contender, including an Academy Award nomination for actress Carol Kane. The film has received a 4K restoration and Blu-ray release through the Cohen Film Collection.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Phenomena [4K UHD / Synapse Films]: This 1985 supernatural horror, also known as Creepers, isn’t the best of Dario Argento’s films by a long shot. However, Synapse always produces top notch film restorations and video transfers. Consequently, if you love this film, this is probably the best you will ever see it on home video.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine  [Blu-ray / Universal]: This police sitcom, created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, starring Andy Samburg (with standout support by Andre Braugher) was pretty consistent throughout its eight seasons. You can get all 153 episodes in this Blu-ray box set.
