Garv’s Pick of the Week: Love Me Tonight (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of September 29th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Love Me Tonight [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald star in this highly regarded pre-code romantic musical comedy from director Rouben Mamoulian.  I haven’t seen it myself, but many people whose opinions I respect list it amongst their favorite films.   With a supporting cast that includes Myrna Loy and Charles Ruggles, it sounds like a safe blind buy.  Plus, I’ve heard great early reviews for the new 4K transfer.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Five Graves to Cairo [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: One of Billy Wilder’s lesser known films gets a 4K restoration and Blu-ray release.  This WWII thriller, set in North Africa stars Franchot Tone, Anne Baxter, Akim Tamiroff, and Erich von Stroheim (as General Rommel).

The Elephant Man [Blu-ray / Criterion]: David Lynch steers closer than usual to narrative coherence in this biopic of John Merrick, shot in glorious Black & White by cinematographer Freddie Francis.
