Garv’s Pick of the Week: Mystery Men (4K UHD, Kino Lorber)

For the release week of November 22nd:

Mystery Men [4K UHD / Kino Lorber]: This superhero comedy, based on a cult comic book series, flopped at the box office in 1999. However, it has built up a fan base in the years that followed. I liked it from the start, and it’s a film I often find myself sucked into if I run across it on TV. The ragtag team of heroes are played by Ben Stiller (Mr. Furious), Hank Azaria (The Blue Raja), William H. Macy (The Shoveler), Janeane Garofalo (The Bowler), Kel Mitchell (the Invisible Boy), Wes Studi (The Sphinx), and Paul Reubens (The Spleen). The original Blu-ray had lackluster video, so the 4K UHD upgrade should be an improvement.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Wall-E [4K UHD / Criterion]: Disney/Pixar teams up with Criterion for the first time with a 4K upgrade of one of their best digitally animated features.

The Company of Wolves [4K UHD / Scream Factory]: Neil Jordan’s werewolf spin on Little Red Riding Hood also gets a 4K UHD upgrade.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles [4K UHD / Paramount]: I don’t particularly like this John Hughes comedy. The humor and sentimentality don’t mesh well, and the story is full of gaping plot holes. However, I realize that I hold a minority opinion.

The Blood Beast Terror [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This 1968 Peter Cushing-led horror from Tigon Studios gets a 2K restoration.

Night Gallery: Season 3 [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Rod Serling’s anthology follow-up to The Twilight Zone is a mixed bag, but it includes some gems.

Peacemaker: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray / Warner Brothers]: James Gunn’s continuation of his Suicide Squad film is a ton of fun.
