Garv’s Pick of the Week: Paths of Glory (4K UHD, Kino Lorber)
For the release week of August 23rd:
Paths of Glory [4K UHD / Kino Lorber]: There have been comparatively few movies made about World War I, and Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 film (cowritten by pulp scribe Jim Thompson) is one of the best. The antiwar film has undergone a new 4K restoration from the original camera negative for a 4K ultra-high definition upgrade on home video. Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, Adolphe Menjou, and George Macready star.
Additional Titles of Interest —
Hôtel du Nord [Blu-ray / Criterion]: I’ve never seen this 1938 French classic, but it looks mighty pretty.
Buck and the Preacher[Blu-ray / Criterion]: Sidney Poitier directed this 1972 Western about an exodus of ex-slaves after the Civil War. The film stars Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, and Cameron Mitchell.
Here is My Heart [Blu-ray / Universal]: Universal premieres three Bing Crosby flicks on Blu-ray this week. This musical comedy is the earliest. Kitty Carlisle and Roland Young co-star.
Welcome Stranger [Blu-ray / Universal]: Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald re-teamed, as a follow-up to their Best Picture winner, Going My Way, in this light comedy about doctors with different approaches to the job.
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court [Blu-ray / Universal]: Mark Twain’s comic novel gets a musical adaptation, starring Bing Crosby, Rhonda Fleming, Cedric Hardwicke, and William Bendix.
The Tarzan Vault Collection [Blu-ray / The Film Detective]: If you love loincloths, this is your week! Three rare, early Tarzan films, Tarzan of the Apes (1918), Adventures of Tarzan (1919), and The New Adventures of Tarzan (1935) are collected in this Blu-ray.
