Garv’s Pick of the Week: Universal Classic Monsters Icons of Horror Collection 4K (Universal)

For the release week of October 5th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Universal Classic Monsters Icons of Horror Collection 4K [4K UHD / Universal]: It’s spooky season, and the classic Universal monsters are making their first foray into 4K UHD. Included in the first box set (in what will likely be a series of 4K releases) are Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), Invisible Man (1933), and The Wolf Man (1941). It appears that all of the documentary featurettes and other supplements that were provided with the prior Blu-ray releases are included in the 4K set. The previous Blu-ray discs were beautifully rendered, but the increase in pixels should provide a more film-like image for these highly cherished titles.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Don Knotts: 5-Film Collection [Blu-ray / Shout Factory]: Atta boy, Luther! Shout Factory has collected Don Knott’s comedies that he made for Universal between 1966 and 1971 in this Blu-ray box set. Included are The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966), The Reluctant Astronaut (1967), The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968), The Love God? (1969), and How to Frame a Figg (1971). All but The Love God? have received prior standalone Blu-ray releases, but the 1969 comedy is one of my favorites. Here’s a link to my review of the film.

Tex Avery Screwball Classics Volume 3 [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: This may be the third volume in this restoration series, but it contains some of Tex Avery’s most wanted cartoons.

Night Shift [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: Michael Keaton had his breakthrough role in this Ron Howard-directed comedy. Henry Winkler co-stars.

Angel on My Shoulder [Blu-ray / VCI]: In this spin on Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), Paul Muni plays a deceased gangster sent back to Earth by the devil (Claude Rains) to take care of unfinished business.

Dead Again [Blu-ray/ Paramount]: Kenneth Branagh’s followed up his Henry V (1989) with this reincarnation noir mystery. Branagh and Emma Thompson co-star.
