Garv’s Pick of the Week: Vengeance Trails: Four Classic Westerns (Arrow Video)
For the release week of July 27th:
Garv’s Pick of the Week: Vengeance Trails: Four Classic Westerns [Blu-ray/ Arrow Video]: Arrow Video, “the Criterion of Cult” always manages to put together a quality package. This box set collects four lesser-known Italian Westerns that were part of the tidal wave of “Spaghettis” inspired by the success of Sergio Leone’s “Dollars” trilogy. Included are Massacre Time (Lucio Fulci, 1966), My Name Is Pecos (Maurizio Lucidi, 1966), Bandidos (Massimo Dallamano, 1967), and And God Said to Cain (Antonio Margheriti, 1970). I haven’t seen any of these, but I’m a sucker for Italian genre cinema from the 60s and 70s.
Additional Titles of Interest —
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage [4K UHD/ Arrow Video]: Speaking of Italian genre films, Dario Argento’s groundbreaking Giallo thriller gets a 4K UHD upgrade. While Mario Bava kicked off the Giallo genre, this film really kicked the fad into high gear. Plus, it’s just a really excellent movie.
Alias Jesse James [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: Bob “I’m starting to look my age” Hope stars in what is generally considered the last of his run of quality solo films. I reviewed this Western comedy and the Kino Lorber Blu-ray in full HERE.
Shenandoah [Blu-ray/ Kino Lorber]: Jimmy Stewart (or should I say “James”) stars in this 1965 Civil War drama.
Stranger on the Run [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: This is an intriguing sounding oddity. It’s a TV-movie Western from 1967, directed by Don “Dirty Harry” Siegel, and starring Henry Fonda, Anne Baxter, (Tarantino-regular) Michael Parks, and the great Dan Duryea.
The Herculoids: The Complete Original Series [Blu-ray / Warner Archive]: I’m constantly amazed when I see releases of Hanna-Barbera animated series that I used to love as a kid, that there were often fewer than 20 episodes total. This one on has 18.
