Garv’s Pick of the Week: Wings of the Hawk 3-D (Kino Lorber)

For the release week of February 9th:

Garv’s Pick of the Week: Wings of the Hawk 3-D [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Despite the fact that 3-D televisions are no longer being produced (although 3-D projectors are), Kino Lorber and the 3-D Film Archive are keeping 3-D Blu-ray alive. This week, they release Budd Boetticher’s 1953 Western Wings of the Hawk (1953). The release will be sourced from a new 2K scan, and a 3-D Woody Woodpecker cartoon will be included as an extra. For those, like myself, that don’t have a 3-D set-up, the standard 2-D release of the feature and cartoon are also included. I’m not familiar with the 1953 film, but I’m interested in picking up this release for three reasons. 1) It’s a Western. 2) It stars Van Heflin, one of the best actors of the classic studio era. 3) It’s directed by the great Budd Boetticher.

Additional Titles of Interest —

Jazz on a Summer’s Day [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Photographer Bert Stern captured portions of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival for this documentary, including performances by Thelonius Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Anita O’Day, Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, and Mahalia Jackson. Some may think that Louis Armstrong was old hat in 1958, but he absolutely blows everyone else away during his set. He may have been the greatest American musician who ever lived.

The Parallax View [Blu-ray / Criterion]: There may come a time when I’m in the mood for a paranoid political conspiracy thriller again, but it may take a few years.

The Suspect [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]I’m always in the mood for a good film noir. this one stars Charles Laughton and Ella Raines.

So Evil My Love [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]Here’s another noir. This one features a roguish Ray Milland.

Arizona Colt [Blu-ray / Wild East]A handful of Euro-Westerns are getting their Blu-ray debuts this week. This one, starring Giuliano Gemma, isn’t available through Amazon, but you can order it directly from WildEast.net.

The Hills Run Red [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Hollywood baddies Henry Silva and Dan Duryea star in this Euro-Western.

Man of the East [Blu-ray / Kino Lorber]: Terence Hill isn’t “Trinity” or “Nobody” in this Euro-Western, but it is still from the same light-hearted, comedy-Western mold.
